Graffiti art has had a distinct role in using public space to reflect or comment on the current socio-political climate. By virtue of being so exposed, it creates an open forum for artistic communication regarding culture and politics. Historically, this is an art form that “hasn’t been for sale” and has often been associated with negative stereotypes. However, recently more and more commercial brands have started co-opting this mode of creative expression for purposes related to advertising. Museums too have started initiating exhibitions that are beginning to co-opt the Graffiti subculture into dominant ideas surrounding the ideal artistic aesthetic. While on face value, this may create professional opportunities for Graffiti artists and may help in combating stereotypes surrounding the artwork, many believe that it stifles the ability with which this mode of creative expression can question dominant ideas of society. It becomes harder for Graffiti art to act as a catharsis for daily workers who struggle to keep up with the fast-paced capitalist society, when it slowly starts getting incorporated in the processes that promote that very same pervasive culture. To many it acts as a tool to eliminate and further stifle all modes of expression that can exist outside the bounds of “the market” and can truly challenge how and in what ways artists can question society.

Many South Asian writers have made use of the trope of “nostalgia” to highlight those ideals they feel were lost due to the “event” of the Partition. Various works of writers like Kamila Shamsie and Agha Shahid Ali, will look back at Pre-partition Lucknow/Kashmir and will specifically highlight instances of communal harmony and friendship. They do this, so that these ideals can act as a mirror for individuals to be hopeful about a future that could replicate these values. Many however, have also questioned this idealizing tendency for its degree of historical accuracy and its ability to oversimplify our understanding of pre-Partition dynamics.
